074 St Philip and James

Sentence: "Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it," says the Lord, "that the Father may be glorified in the Son." John 14.13

Collect: Almighty God, whom truly to know is eternal life: teach us to know your Son, Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, so that following in the steps of your apostles Philip and James, we may steadfastly walk in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

Isaiah 30:18-21

The LORD waits to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show mercy to you. For the LORD is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him. Truly, O people in Zion, inhabitants of Jerusalem, you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when he hears it, he will answer you. Though the Lord may give you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, yet your Teacher will not hide himself any more, but your eyes shall see your Teacher. And when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left, your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way; walk in it."

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 19 APBA p 239

1. The heavens declare the glory of God:

and the firmament proclaims his handiwork;

2. One day tells it to another:

and night to night communicates knowledge.

3. There is no speech or language:

nor are their voices heard;

4. Yet their sound has gone out through all the world:

and their words to the ends of the earth.

5. There he has pitched a tent for the sun:

which comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run his course.

6. Its rising is at one end of the heavens, and its circuit to their farthest bound:

and nothing is hidden from its heat.

1 Corinthians 15:1-8

Now I would remind you, brothers and sisters, of the good news that I proclaimed to you, which you in turn received, in which also you stand, through which also you are being saved, if you hold firmly to the message that I proclaimed to you -- unless you have come to believe in vain. For I handed on to you as of first importance what I in turn had received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures, and that he was buried, and that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the scriptures, and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers and sisters at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have died. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.

Hear the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

John 14:6-14 ... Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus said to Thomas, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him." Philip said to him, "Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied." Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

For the gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
