Sentence: Be strong, and let your heart take courage, all you who wait for the LORD. Psalm 31.24
Collect: God of justice and mercy, from whose glory all have fallen short, and by whose free gift all may be saved through faith in your Son: help us to hear his voice and to know your will, that our lives may be built securely upon the only sure foundation, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
or: God of crisis, you lay before us either blessing or curse: in our confusion give us clarity, and in our hesitation the courage to choose boldly the way that leads to you; through Jesus Christ. Amen.
You shall put these words of mine in your heart and soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and fix them as an emblem on your forehead. Teach them to your children, talking about them when you are at home and when you are away, when you lie down and when you rise. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, so that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the LORD swore to your ancestors to give them, as long as the heavens are above the earth. See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the LORD your God that I am commanding you today; and the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn from the way that I am commanding you today, to follow other gods that you have not known. Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.
Psalm 31:1-5,21-27 APBA p 250
1. To you, LORD, have I come for shelter:
let me never be put to shame.
2. O deliver me in your righteousness:
incline your ear to me and be swift to save me.
3. Be for me a rock of refuge, a fortress to defend me:
for you are my high rock and my stronghold.
4. Lead me and guide me for your name's sake:
bring me out of the net that they have secretly laid for me, for you are my strength.
5. Into your hands I commit my spirit:
you will redeem me, O LORD God of truth.
21. O how plentiful is your goodness, stored up for those that fear you:
and prepared in the sight of all for those who come to you for refuge.
22. You will hide them in the cover of your presence from the plots of their enemies:
you will shelter them in your refuge from the strife of tongues.
23. Blessed be the LORD our God:
for he has wonderfully shown me his steadfast love, when I was as a city besieged.
24. When I was afraid, I said in my haste:
"I am cut off from your sight."
25. But you heard the voice of my supplication:
when I cried to you for help.
26. Love the LORD, all you his faithful ones:
for the LORD guards the true but fully requites the proud.
27. Be strong, and let your heart take courage:
all you that hope in the LORD.
I am not ashamed of the gospel; it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, "The one who is righteous will live by faith." But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, since God is one; and he will justify the circumcised on the ground of faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law. Hear the word of the Lord, thanks be to God.
Matthew 7:15-29 ... Glory to you Lord Jesus Christ.
Jesus said: "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles? In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will know them by their fruits. "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven. On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many deeds of power in your name?' Then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; go away from me, you evildoers.' "Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell -- and great was its fall!" Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes. For the Gospel of the Lord, praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.
